Welcome to my website. I photograph wildlife in my spare time and I’d describe myself as a nature lover first and a photographer second. I find the natural world fascinating, beautiful and inspiring. I love getting out to observe wildlife and feel privileged to have witnessed some of the things I’ve seen. I’ve had kingfishers and sparrowhawks fly within two metres of me, I’ve seen a leopard burst out of the bushes to kill an impala, watched a cheetah chase and bring down a kudu, seen a peregrine falcon ambush a flock of ducks, had a humpback whale swim right under the small boat I was in, and even had a water vole run over the toe of my boot on it’s way to the river as I sat motionless waiting for a kingfisher to fly past. Many of these experiences I have completely failed to photograph! But sometimes I get lucky and end up with an image I think is worth sharing and that’s the aim of this website.
I live in South West London and do most of my photography in Southern England or on holiday. The African pictures were taken during 3 self-drive safaris totalling about 35 days in Kruger National Park, South Africa. The photos from India were taken during 6 days in Ranthambore National Park. Those from Brazil were taken on a 10 day trip to the Pantanal and those from Canada on a 10 day trip to Vancouver Island and Knight Inlet.
I try to be as original as possible with my photography and prefer to do research and fieldwork rather than to seek situations where others do that for you. For example, I’ve spent hundreds of hours trying to photograph kingfishers in flight. This is how we usually see them, whizzing down a river at great speed, but it’s a scene that’s very rarely photographed because kingfishers can more easily be photographed when they sit on or dive from a perch. Kingfisher flight photography is certainly difficult and I don’t have the perfect shot yet, but I won’t stop trying!
Finally, it’s important to stress that with wildlife photography the welfare of the subject and it’s environment must always come first, ahead of the photographer’s wish to get a picture. I have always followed this golden rule and always will. I believe it’s also important to be honest about how images have been created. All of the wildlife photos here show wild animals unless otherwise stated in the caption. And all images have had only minor digital manipulation unless declared otherwise in the caption.
I hope you enjoy the photos.
